With the help of sample tests and relevant teaching materials, you will become familiar with the structure of the examination in question and train the various types of subtests. Mock examinations help you in acquiring the necessary examination techniques (time management, concept etc.) and in overcoming exam nerves. All the examinations take place twice a year, either at the Goethe Institue itself or at licensed institutes.
Preparation for the Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung of the Goethe Institute (ZMP) The "Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung" (ZMP) certificate attests a good level of proficiency in standard German. After having mastered the basic level, you will need a further 300 lessons to be able to pass this examination. A high level of proficiency in colloquial German is prereqisite for this examination.
Almost all Studienkollegs, many Fachhochschulen [universities of applied sciences] and a few universities accept this examination as proof of sufficient proficiency in German for studying. Preparation for the Kleines Deutsche Sprachdiplom examination of the Goethe Institute (KDS) The Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom [Minor Language Certificate] attests an advanced level of proficiency in standard German. As far as the level of difficulty is concerned, it is comparable to the Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung (ZOP) [Upper Secondary Level Test Certificate, also issued by the Goethe Institute]. However, in excession of the latter, it includes additional knowledge of various areas of German culture and Landeskunde [regional studies] The preparation for this examination consists of three different modules, in which you can enrol as you please. However, if you want to sit the examination, we recommend doing them all. Minimum age for course participation: 16 years Those who passed the KDS exam will be exempted from the German language proficiency test (DSH) at German universities and other institutes of higher education. Preparation for the Großes Deutsche Sprachdiplom examination of the Goethe Institute (GDS) With the Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom [Major Language Certificate] an almost native-speaker proficiency is attested. Apart from university and interpretor/ translator degrees, the GDS is the highest certificate of German as a Foreign Language. It is well-known and appreciated world-wide by public and private employers. The courses thoroughly prepare you for all subtests. We will send you a list of the books that have to be read for the next examinations on request.
Minimum age for course participation and for the examination: 18 years
Just as the ZOP (Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung) and the KDS (Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom), the GDS makes you exempt from sitting the DSH (exceeding its requirements by far). In some countries, the GDS is accepted as proof of language proficiency for prospective teachers of German, as well as for teachers from the EU who want to work in Germany.
